The Journeys End - Theme: Escapism
In The Journeys end escapism is presented through characters such as Trotter and Stanhope. Trotter deals with war by turning his attention to food, "war with pepper is bad- but war without pepper- is bloody awful" this states that Trotter uses food to improve his experience with coping with the war, therefore meaning he relies on it to escape the true reality. Stanhope also has a way to escape, he uses alcohol to do this. "Bring me some whisky" before war Stanhope was against all smoking and drinking, however now that he is drinking it shows that he has gone against he's own morals due to the desperation Stanhope is in. However it is a way for him to cope with the present situation and escape the cold reality of war.
